Match report Barwell's promotion hopes suffered an agonising set back yesterday as they lost to Syston Town 2nds by just 1 run.

As Syston batted first Barwell's bowlers made some initial inroads reducing the opposition to 53 for 3. Unfortunately for Barwell, Syston's 8th wicket pair took them to 176 for 7 off their 45 overs. The wickets were shared between Liam O'Rourke (3 for 46), Lee Skene (2 for 41), Ben Betteridge (1 for 20) and Ady Baker (1 for 42), whilst Nick Hines was unlucky not to claim a wicket in his 8 overs for just 22 runs.

Barwell's reply got off to an uncertain start as they struggled to 73 for 5 off the first 30 overs. Skipper Jack Smith did his best to bring his team victory as he struck 3 4s and 5 6s in his 74. With lower order support from Josh Moore (19) and Ady Baker (10) it came to the last over with Barwell needing 10 for victory. With Jack run out to off the 1st ball of the over, Nick came to the wicket and struck a 6 from his first ball before taking a single to bring Skeney on strike with two runs required. Unfortunately for Barwell Lee was bowled by the 2nd to last ball of the day to leave Barwell an agonising 2 runs short of victory.

Barwell must pick themselves up from this narrow defeat as they host Newbold Verdon next week in a must win game.
